Chen Kang asked Boyu: "Have you received any instruction different from what the rest of us have heard?" Boyu replied: "Not really. Once, when my father was standing alone and I was hastening across the courtyard, he asked: 'Have you studied the Odes?' I replied: 'Not yet.' He said: 'Without studying the Odes, you will have no means of expression.' I withdrew and studied the Odes. On another occasion, he was again standing alone, and as I hastened across the courtyard, he asked: 'Have you studied the rites?' I replied: 'Not yet.' He said: 'Without studying the rites, you will have no means of establishing yourself.' I withdrew and studied the rites. These two things are what I have heard from him." Chen Kang withdrew, greatly pleased, and said: "I asked one question and learned three things: I learned about the Odes, I learned about the rites, and I learned that the gentleman keeps a certain distance from his own son."
