Zilu said: "The ruler of Wei is waiting for you to take charge of governance — what would you put first?" The Master said: "Without doubt, the rectification of names!" Zilu said: "Is that so? How impractical you are, Master! What is there to rectify?" The Master said: "How uncouth you are, You! An exemplary person, in matters he does not fully understand, maintains a posture of reserving judgment. If names are not rectified, speech will not accord with truth; if speech does not accord with truth, affairs cannot be accomplished; if affairs cannot be accomplished, rites and music will not flourish; if rites and music do not flourish, punishments will not be fitting; if punishments are not fitting, the people will not know where to put their hands and feet. Therefore, whatever name the exemplary person assigns, it must be expressible in words; whatever he expresses in words, it must be practicable. The exemplary person, in regard to his words and actions, tolerates no carelessness whatsoever."
