Zizhang asked, "What must a man of service be like before he can be said to have achieved penetration?" The Master said, "What do you mean by penetration?" Zizhang replied, "To be of certain repute in the state, and to be of certain repute in the noble's domain." The Master said, "That is reputation, not penetration. The man of penetration is straightforward by nature and loves righteousness; he weighs others' words and observes their expressions, and is always mindful of deferring to others. Such a man will achieve penetration in the state, and will achieve penetration in the noble's domain. The man of mere reputation puts on an appearance of benevolence while his conduct contradicts it, and he dwells in this pretense without any misgiving. He will have reputation in the state, and will have reputation in the noble's domain."
